Beautiful stylized Ngil mask from the Fang tribe from Gabon.
The heart shape of the face, prominent nose, high forehead and pursed lips are typical features of these masks.
Masks like these light masks represented the spirit of an ancestor and were originally used for social control by the 'Ngil', the judiciary association.
Initiations of new tribe members and matters of jurisdiction were settled, using these masks.
