All Mossi masks participated in funeral rites of notables and elders to watch over the right implementation of the funeral ceremony and to make sure the soul of the deceased is correctly guided on its journey to the spirit realm, from where she will protect the living.
They were also used at the beginning of the sowing season, when sacrifices are made to ensure a bountiful harvest.
Between these rites they are kept on the family altar, where they can receive gifts and offerings.
