This mask displays a partial facial paralysis, these type of masks were used to combat sickness. 

Mbangu masks were a major inspiration for Picasso's 'African period' (1906-1909) & his focus on cubism, after visiting an African art exhibition at the ethnographic museum at Palais du Trocadéro in May/June 1907.

The black & white halfs symbolize the battle between the good and the evil. The black part symbolizes a burn mark, probably due to a fireplace accident.
